It seems to me that if you've got this pad resting against the 1st compensating slide, then your whole hand must be resting in rather an inefficient position (for pushing the valves down) anyway - when I tried this just now, I had a sensation of the tendons moving over the knuckle joints that was rather unpleasant. What's recommended is to depress the valves with the tips of your fingers only, with your hand (and particularly your fingers) in a horizontal position. Some players even hold their right arms out horizontally as well. You'll find that, with a little practise, changes like this will incorporate into your playing very quickly, with no loss of fingering ability. Dave --
