I've found this discussion interesting, as we were one of the bands at NABBA
that took advantage of the substitution rules. We did this, however, not
because we are in favor of substitution but simply because we could--we had
enough players this year to allow us to swap out several between pieces. On
the positive side, this allowed us to bring more of our members to NABBA,
including some new members who had not previously been, and gave all of them
the experience of competing. As brass bands are still relatively few and far
between here, and NABBA is the only competition going, without this rule
several members would not have had this experience.
