RE: A number of questions

Dave, re question 3 (pasted below); this is no small topic and not one that
is easy for discussion as it is highly 'individualistic' and without being
able to see your problems, is like a surgeon performing an operation whilst
blindfolded! - However, get hold of:-

'the art of BRASS playing' by Philip Farkas
published by Wind Music * Inc
153 Highland Parkway
Rochester
New York 14620
Library of Congress Catalogue Card No. 62-20149

This is a fantastic theatise on the formation and use of the brass player's
embouchure, it covers topics like the Embouchure's function (the Jaw,
Muscles, Mouthpiece angles etc), Photographic studies of Virtuoso players
(including Robert Lambert (trombone) and Vincent Cichowicz (trumpet) as well
as Philip Farkas (French Horn) himself.

The book then moves onto Mouthpiece placement and tackles the age long
discussion of 'moist' versus 'dry' lips. This is followed by Lip apertures,
Articulation, mouthpiece pressure (and common problems associated with
pressure). The final chapter deals with the all important Breath Control -
with out this all that has been learnt in the prior chapters would be to no
avail.

To conclude, it is a very well balanced book and incredibly useful for
anyone who is having embouchure problems or is studying music with Brass as
their main instrument.

I bought this book in 1985 and it cost 15.00 British pounds, it was written
in 1962 and was not easy to get hold of but with the information above good
book stores should be able to locate a copy.
