This is to an extent true. It apparently can also be acquired with a great
deal of work. I remember Gillian Wier (organist) giving a lecture while I
was at University. She spent her student years going round the Paris
underground banging a tuning fork on walls and listening to it, as her
teacher (Messiaen??) considered it to be a very useful tool for a musician
to have. Unfortunately, she has spent the rest of her life mentally
transposing music into the key she hears it in, and as organs are frequently
not in A=440 it must be excruciating!
