Similar problem happens with other music software (personal Composer, BiB
etc). Have found that it is usually the font that has been installed into
Windows. It is either corrupt (reinstall font), has a wrong registry address
(fix with Nortons Windoctor or hack through the registry) or another font
loaded has the same name (yes - it does happen). Unless you can be sure you
have removed the font thoroughly from the whole system, a reload often does
not work. Frustration often leads to (shudder) Format C: - the universal
fix. Good luck.
