RE: Question from Trumpet List

HI, guys!

According to the Schilke Loyalist
(http://www.dallasmusic.org/schilke/Cornets.html) Howard Snell, then of the
Desford Colliery band, used to play a Schilke Eb trumpet instead of a sop
because of its improved intonation over the then current crop of sopranos.
Fearing that this might catch on and hurt sales, Boosey and Hawkes (who
sponsored the conpetition) got the rules changed to ban Eb trumpets from
competition. Snell then asked Schilke to make him a sop, and the rest is
history. (Heck, even I play one (Schilke sop) now!!! ;-) )

Bottom line is that while trumpets used to be legal (or at least not
illegal) they are now.

Hope this helps!
