Thank you Nigel very much for the information

Question:? Would I write ala orchestrally using the clarinets as =
"strings".=20
In the Concert Bands I've heard play it seems to me that the clarinets =
seem=20
to get the bulk of the work. I'm presuming the saxophones play the horn=20
parts like in an orchestra.. In school bands its very rare to see french =
horns=20
either in Bb or in F; rarely bass clarinet as well. Some bands are even =
lucky to=20
have a bassoon so you see it makes it difficult to write for them;
the rest are usually found in school bands to a greater or lesser =
degree,=20
clarinets being most dominant. As a clarinetist as well as playing =
cornet
I can see the reason; the clarinet more or less plays in the same range =
as the
violin. (I majored on clarinet ). I think the expense(excuding clarinet/ =
trumpet) is the prohibitive
factor with a lot of school concert bands. A bassoon is dreadfully =
expensive and
the oboe is not far behind, cost wise.

Question?, Tenor troms written in treble or bass clef and are they =
concert=20
pitch in a concert band, or are they transposed as in a brass band. In a =
brass
 band the bass trom is written concert pitch and the tenor trom as a =
transposing=20
instrument; many is the time that our M D has given the solo trom to a =
cornet mainly
 due to the lack of a solo trom player and it seemed to work well.=20
I believe that in modern brass band the trombone is written in the =
treble clef=20
mainly due to the musicians being swapped around on instruments and most =
may not be
able to read the bass clef. I believe that in the orchestra the tenor =
trom is written in=20
concert pitch although I've always written it as a transposing =
instrument.in the treble clef.
Reading it the player "thinks" down the octave if you understand my =
meaning.

In any case you have enlighted me greatly and I thank you very much for =
your time
and effort. The history of Military-Concert-Wind bands has been most =
helpful to me.

Yours sincerely,

Richard.    South Australia

Again a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS and a PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR.
