I was recently in discussion with a wind band conductor in the US who was confused about the grading system used in the UK. I've reproduced the salient points from the discussion here in case it helps non UK-based people to understand our system. Here is a good place to start http://www.abrsm.org/?page=exams/gradedMusicExams/latestSyllabuses.html The Associated Board runs all the exams. In a nutshell grade 1 is a real beginner, grade 8 should be able to play a solo with most amateur bands and grade 5 or 6 should be your minimum entry standard unless you are either "open to all" or a top section band in which case all should be at least grade 8 standard. Happy New Year to everyone. -- Nigel Horne. Arranger, Adjudicator, Band Trainer, Composer, Tutor, Typesetter. NJH Music, Barnsley, UK.
