Tommy was first taught to play the cornet by his elder brother Albert, and was one of the last surviving members of the band = which won the Cassell=92s Saturday Journal Shield at Crystal Palace in 1927 = under the direction of the great Harry Evetts; the band=92s first, and, until = this year, only national championship win. After the 1927 win, a number of players left the band for professional careers in the emerging dance halls and Tommy became the band=92s = principal cornet. Tommy featured in most of the band=92s concerts, playing a = variety of solos such as =93Selected=94, =93My Dreams=94 (Tosti), =93Because=94 = (Guy d'Hardelot), =93O! Dry Those Tears=94 (Del Riego), =93I'll Sing Thee Songs of = Araby=94 (Clay) and =93The Lost Chord=94 (Sullivan) as well as leading the band to winning = the Russell Shield at the Leicester Brass Band Festival in 1935. In the late 1930s Tommy became bandmaster to Harry Evetts, a post he = held, apart from the war years, until he left the band in c. 1948. The same = team of Tommy and Harry Evetts also led the Derby Borough Police Band = (founded 1936) to winning the Senior Trophy in 1942 and the Grand Shield in 1943, winning the latter contest by three points, and in doing so beating = bands conducted by both Fred and Harry Mortimer. In the late 1970s and 1980s, Tommy formed a small band with other former Long Eaton players such as Arthur Veazey and Johnny Clay which gave = concerts in the local retirement homes (to audiences generally younger than themselves). The band=92s current conductor, Sharon Stansfield n=E9e = Ramplin, who was taught by Tommy=92s son Ken, was honoured to assist at some of = these events. Tommy=92s funeral is at Markeaton Crematorium Derby on Wednesday 10th January at 2:40 p.m. The reception will be held afterwards in the Long = Eaton Silver Prize Band Club (which Tommy helped to found). -- - - NJH Sheet Music, bandsman.co.uk/music.htm, id xpress, www.idxpress.co.uk, brass band insignia and uniform products, Just Brass, the on-line resource for the world of brass music www.justbrass.co.uk, Prima Arts, quality music for quality bands, www.prima-arts.co.uk, wax-recording.com, simply the best, most cost-effective and least stressful route to recording an album and eBay, the world's largest on-line market place, www.ebay.co.uk Free e-mail address with spam and virus removal, bandsman.co.uk/mail.htm
