Bernstein's introduction to music, yesterday's prom.

For those interested, and some may remember first time
round - the interval on yesterday Tuesday's prom.
featured Bernstein's introductions to the orchestra
and music, I jotted down a few bits, you can listen
again on "Real Player" about forty minutes into the
prom. I.e. after the "Petrushka" about 8.10pm.

I wonder if anyone offers the series on disc etc, for
sale . .see Bernstein web site below

In those days, less commercial pressure on TV.
Expected one season. Lots of fan mail, sponsorship of
major companies . Went up to ten seasons monochrome,
then continued in colour (see his tie!) - and around
the world.

Twenty Minutes Last On... Tuesday 14 August 2007
20:05- 20:25 Radio 3
Leonard Bernstein: Tom Service looks back to
Bernstein's Young People's Concerts with help from
people close to him, including his daughter Jamie who
inspired much of their content.

At the end of his life, Leonard Bernstein considered
his education work his crowning achievement as a
musician. His hugely energetic Young People's Concerts
were shown on prime-time American television
throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s, and syndicated all
over the world. (CBS - man, piano, orchestra - no
"frills" - ratings winner)

Tom Service looks back to these landmarks of televised
music education with help from people close to
Bernstein, including his daughter Jamie who inspired
much of their content.

Duration: 20 minutes

Evangeline Bernadetti (cello), Craig Urqhart, Roger
Englander, daughter Jamie.

More of himself . .Carnegie Hall "Eflat and Fsharp"
Not about anything, music just is, pleasure out of
listening.
What are modes, cf Beatles etc.
Whatever subject, understood by the end. B. wrote all
the words himself. He was a Teacher. Never talked
down, challenged to reach up - understandable at 4 yrs
or 80. Significance of Interval in music.
Inspire to search out more . ..best gift as teacher.
Statement, command cf suggestion often stronger,
deeper more subtle.
Notes cannot be exact measurements, music can be more
or less realistic in its own way - e.g. a theme,
clear, direct. Or fuzzy wisps of melody.

Now, trying to make entertaining "accessible" to ch'n.
 Makes it too cheap.

Sonata form. Mozart Jupiter Symphony.

Desire to communicate his own excitement, got such a
kick .. Resonates the longest after he's gone.

>From 40 mins to 1 hr into the prom. on realplayer.
Don't try the "interval talk" prompt on BBC site,
doesn't work (yet?)
