St Sthytians Band from Cornwall in Malta

The St Styhtians Brass Band from Cornwall, UK has just toured Malta & Gozo
between the 12th and 18th August 2007. During the tour the Band
participated in the village festa of Santa Marija in Mqabba and was hosted
there by the Society of Santa Marija and King George V Band of Mqabba, as
well as by the Town Council of the village on the 12th August Evening. In
Mqabba the Band performed 3 concerts: On the 13th August evening the Band
performed a concert and then participated during the finale of the
Marching Parade held by the King George V Band and its supporters - Here
the band performed the song 'We are the Champions' in honour of the Mqabba
Fireworks Team that won the Caput Lucis Fireworks World Championship near
Rome, Italy earlier in August. On the 14th August the UK Band performed a
second concert in Mqabba. Among the distinct guests for the evening were
the Prime Minister of Malta Dr. Lawrence Gonzi and wife, as well as the
Education Minister for Malta, Dr. Louis Galea. The Prime Minister happily
accepted an invitation by Derek Johnston, Musical Director, to perform
with the Band, playing the Triangle. On the 15th August evening a third
concert was performed in Mqabba by this Cornish Band - The concert,
enjoyed very well by Mqabba people, contributed to give a very happy
ending for this year Mqabba Festa. Once the Festa was over, on the days of
16th and 17th August, the St. Stythians Band performed concerts in
Marsascala, Malta, and Ghajnsielem, Gozo. On both occasions the BAnd was
hosted by the Towns' Local Councils and Bands. During the time when the
band was 'off playing' different interesting visits around Malta and Gozo.
There was also plenty of time to discover and experience the traditional
aspects of the Mqabba Village Festa such as, Fireworks Displays, Maltese
Bands playing in Marching and Concerts, Village street and square
decorations, Religious celebrations and processions, as well as colourful
Marching Parades. There was plenty of time for the St Stithians people to
discover the village of Mqabba, and make friends with the local people.
The final night of the 17th August has been also great with a huge warm
welcome by the people of the village of Ghajnsielem, Gozo. Malta is a
small island which however can offer plenty of things to all those who
visit. Amaong them are the summer sun and the mediterranean sea, which the
St Stythians Band members had plenty of time to enjoy.

The St Stythians Band was the third UK Band to visit Malta during this
period, and has been the second one from Cornwall. And as in the past,
this year has been another huge success. All of the Band members and the
supporters who came to Malta enjoyed this trip very much, and most of them
would like to return to Malta in a near future. Hope that this tradition
of getting UK Bands to visit Malta for our village festa period will
