Dissapointed myself over the past weekend. Just completed an open air contest in Scotland.... Until the last 3 days I was spot on with most of the work involved... guess I put too much practice into it prior to the contest as I knew my lips were shot a day before... Although I made no major mistakes...

I know this really has nothing to do with your project (which has now finished) but whilst were on the subject. Here is my practice mute. Its made from a toilet roll center. You make two cuts from each end, one 3/4 of the way in, the second 1/4 of the way in.....Make sure not to join the two togethe...

I remeber one christmas, my main present was a small but heavy box... I would have been eleven I guess. Wow, it was a Denis Wick No.2 horn mouthpiece in gold no less :D ......It seems not only had the band master been talking to my parents about a more suiting mouthpiece but later that afternoon I d...

Well, I know opinions on this subject are very split... Most of the time however I feel the deffinition of what is and is not vibrato can be blurred. We all know that the sound we make is a result of lip vibration or a frequency if you like so one could argue that by simply producing a straight note...

So, back to the original question having clarified those points: Are we still able to help one another without fear of repercussions, or is the brass band community becoming a massive bunch of "thems" and "us's" where we can't trust anyone? yes, we can trust people, your unfortu...

Healthy rivalry is one of the enjoyable aspects of banding for me..... Just as in football. I originate from the north east area so the main rivals were Newcastle and Sunderland..... Next door neighbours sometimes supported the other side, passionately. Animated conversations would often sprout from...

You should not be thinking about vibrato at all, it should come naturally without thought at the right time. However, soloists can suffer from excessive vibrato and non soloists and more often backrow cornets in lower section bands simply have none! which is a shame as a basic ammount of vibrato hel...

UK is mainly Besson sov's for everything except Yamaha trombones and sop......possibly shilke sop. Its the sov 928 cornet that is the preferred model amongst the Besson cornet range. ::: A side note I would be interested to learn of any bulk supliers (from anywhere in the world) who can kit out a ju...

In approx one months time I will have been playing for one year. Stating to hit cleanly above top A now without forcing the note, upper range is starting to cruise now. about time as well :? :) Got to really work on 'on demand' top C's now. Key sigs are not too much of an issue any more as long as w...

I have recently started to use watered down washing up liquid in an old valve oil bottle exclusively....

The cheapest brand as it is not so concentrated.
Cleans and lubricates at the same time, also I can callibrate the consistency perfectly to my own valves.....

very happy.
