- Topic: Why can’t some bands play hymn tunes properly?

Well, with all the bands I've ever played with very rarely have they used any percussion, even when they did there was very little. Some hymn tunes sound fine with staggered breathing, often it can be quite successful producing a full sound. However, some hymn tunes definately need to show their phr...

Sorry to be 'picky' about spellings, but I am afraid it is spelt SOVEREIGN. The way that you have spelt it would be pronounced so-va-jeen or so-va-geen. I have played a Sovereign Soprano Cornet a few years back and the valves were great, however, I had worn them in. I have also played a Besson Prest...

Instrument Grants
I have recently applied to EMI Music Sound Foundation and was awarded £500 (out of my requested £1,585) towards a Besson Sovereign Tenor Horn.
Obviously that and trading in my current instrument would only add up to around £750.
does anyone know of any other charities to which I can apply to?

Well I've never heard of a brass band musician who doesn't know what vibrato is. I hope I have done well in translating your post and that is what you're asking. Vibrato (on any voice or instrument) is used to mellow the tone of a soloist or to blend in as an ensemble. It is difficult to explain wit...

Throughout my brass band career I have always looked up to various female band members, who were often the best in the band. I originated in Saltash Town band where the best player in the band (and still is) is Tina Fulcher the 1st baritone. She has been playing for 25 years and has played with Cham...

Yes, I have heard several ow~ow~ow noises from people who I wouldn't expect. Also I have heard an extremely bad trumpetist who's vibrato is so bad its difficult to hear a note from start to finish. I have observed that a nice way of using vibrato is to tail off the note, which produces a warming ton...

Well done Tracey, I wouldn't of stayed if they spat all over my jacket. You were doing them a favour and they didn't appreciate it. I agree with John about the rivalry statement, but it does not excuse what they did. With my last band there was a similar rivalry with a band that was a section higher...
