Hi all,

I play with a small but old band. We have lots of sheet music gathered through the ages in various states of organisation. Our requirement is to organise our sheet music such that it can be:

1. stored safely and retrieved easily
2. reviewed quickly for suitability for the current band
3. flexible; so that we can swap parts between instruments

What golden rules do you live by when filing, retrieving, issuing your sheet music? Please assume that I have zero-knowledge on this matter, all thoughts and ideas are welcome.

i play in hart county band and we have alot of sheet music me and a bunch of others got the clear binder sheets to store it in. it works nicely and we can pack it around in our binder.

our band librarian has told me she puts the parts in folders, in order - sop, solo cornet etc. and writes on the front how many of each part there is, then sorts it into things like test pieces, solos, entertainment pieces etc. and in alphabetical order of the name of the piece. As for knowing the standard of it for the band, i have no idea, as our conductor knows all the pieces so well that we all just ask him!
