Departure of the Queen of Sheba

Handel Arr. Nigel Horne

This solo was inspired from the title which was suggested to me by a friend. He didn't know what the piece should sound like, just its title.

Given that challenge I have written an upbeat virtuoso level solo. Originally for the trombone, the piece is also available as a euphonium solo, both of these settings have a full brass band accompaniment. The accompaniment is fairly easy so the piece should work well for visiting soloists. A version also exists for brass quintet with optional drum kit.

The challenge is, is the piece playable? I wrote the piece without worrying whether it was physically possible, I wanted the chance to write a piece of music "for its own sake". So the gauntlet has been thrown!

Inspired by some of the "big band" arrangements of the classics this piece will enhance the concert of any top section band or virtuoso ensemble. Don't be fooled by the sound and title of the piece. It isn't a humorous piece: someone once said that to keep up the joke I should add a few quotes from some (copyrighted!) pieces of music. Unfortunately he missed the point of the piece, don't fall into that trap!

You can view samples of both the full band, and the quintet versions from here.

Price/Difficulty code: A (full band) E (quintet version)
