Wow that's really cool! We did the lord mayor's parade last year with my army cadet band and we were on TV for five whole minutes! It was absolutely, positively, the coldest gig i have ever done in my life. We had to get up at stupid o'clock in the morning and a horn player and a flute player actual...

this weekend, when my army cadet band was doing a parade for VE day, we had to stand for a service on the parade square before hand. At the beginning, we kept standing at ease then being brought to attention then back at ease, but for about fifteen minutes, we just had to stand at ease for a while, ...

At a concert at Fratton Park football ground, just before the pompey vs Arsenal match this december, our french horn section (two teenage girls!) were giggling so much at the thought of being so near to Thierry Henry that not only on the way in, one of the managed to drop their music in a puddle, bu...

On the way back from a tour in Belgium this summer, one of the players had a large black sack with something in as part of his luggage and wouldn't tell anyone what it was. It wasn't until a week later tht we all found out from his sister that when we went out for a meal on the last night, he took h...

Woah! I'm not generalising and saying that no southerners have a full sound. no one said that yorkshire bands can't play pppp. I agree that anyone can have a big sound if they work at it and do it correctly. But i'm not sure what your point is in this statement.
I disagree....
Is he by any chance from Yorkshire then?
Nope! Just plain old down south like the rest of us!
Does he mean sound or dynamics? Surely the conductor can tell the difference...
By a full ff, i don't mean loud, but full sounding. Anyone can blast a note on a brass instrume...
well, I am always taking the piss out of the band i conduct for being southern (especially the basses) But maybe if the band has no 'sound' the MD should do some band training..... oh, and buy in a strong bass section!
lol we don't have no sound at all, but ...

I think contesting is really important in a band cos it gives you something to work towards. ideally our band would do 2 or 3 a year, but because of funding, we only do the regionals every year, plus one in the autumn maybe. They stretch they band and keep players interested. Also, you didn't mentio...

it's really very simple:

C - 0
Db - 1,2,3
D - 1,3
Eb - 2,3
E - 1,2 or 3
F - 1
Gb - 2
G - 0
Ab - 2,3
A - 1,2
Bb - 1
B - 2
C - 0
Db - 1,2
D - 1
Eb - 2
E - 0
F - 1
Gb - 2
G - 0

It's not too bad really. Good luck with that. Baritone is great!
