University brass bands

Post by Hannah-horn »

Hi all. Just thought I'd make a little mention of the brass band world in University life and prove that students can mix studying, drinking and playing in equal amounts!
I play solo horn with the Leeds University Brass band (Nigel Horne incidentally is also a member). Recently, we played a joint concert with the University of Durham brass band. Both bands are of a very high quality considering the fact that neither are auditioning (I'd say, and our conductor agrees, second section standard). All the members are either students or university staff and the social and musical mix is commendable.
The University of Warwick brass band also deserve a mention and do actually compete in their area contests. The University of Liverpool brass band are actually considering setting up a University Challenge (so to speak) to allow University brass bands to compete against one another. Of course, the personnel changes every year so competition will vary!

Anyway, we'll be playing whit friday and hopefully see some of our friends from Warwick again (green hair!). We don't necessarily go to win (ok we definately don't) but we WILL be having a great time playing music which is what the marches are all about. Sadly our lovely conductor, Matthew cannot lead us as he has to play for Rothwell Temperance but hopefully Nigel can pound out the bass drum for us! If you're there give us a cheer, we'll probably give you one back!

I'll be adjudicating at Roundthorne, so no ear pounding bass drum from me!
