Selling via the Internet

Post by njh »

Because of the Brass Band Portal's success we do unfortunately attract some less savoury customers. Although cases of fraud when selling through the Internet are rare, here are a couple of words of advice.

When selling an instrument here or via the classified ad's page (www.bandsman.co.uk/sale.htm):

1) Imagine you were a buyer, what questions would you ask? If a potential
buyer isn't asking those type of questions be aware that they may not be who
they claim to be.
2) Unless you know the potential purchaser, be wary of selling abroad.
3) The so called "nigerian scam" is still common place on the Internet. Be
especially aware of people who claim to be acting on behalf of 3rd parties
and those who "have a bankers draft ready". Key phrases used by these
fraudsters are "best price" and "pics".

The classified ad's page has some measures (real email addresses are no longer used and the software used to send on messages blocks some fraudulent emails) that are not present on the forum. But even these measures are not 100%.

Sellers and purchases are not vetted by us so always be on your guard.
